Context
Vast health inequities in Jerusalem result from rising poverty and unemployment levels, poor awareness and indirect services.
Healthcare providers have struggled to build community-based interventions in the field of diabetes that empower residents to access and make use of resources available to them. JICC has been implementing a multi-pronged approach on the individual, community and institutional levels to reduce instances of T2D, help those diagnosed with T2D to better manage their disease, and implement policy changes for wide scale structural change to health outcomes across Jerusalem.
Strategies
Health Forum
JICC coordinates the “Forum for Reducing Gaps in Health Services in East Jerusalem, a consortium of eight organizations working together to improve the quality and availability of health services available to Palestinians in Jerusalem.
Education
New workshops for young mothers that address culturally aware meal planning and nutrition, mental health, and general healthy living, including home fitness routines. Additionally, these workshops teach diabetes management through glucose monitoring and basic health checks, along with collaborative goal setting.
Food Security
JICC accesses fresh, unsalable vegetables that are rescued from the Jerusalem wholesale market and delivers these to approximately 50 families in need, at least once a week (in partnership with sister organization “Food Rescuers”).
